2000 W balcony power plants – large kits up to 2,000 Wp

Since Solar Package I, plug-in solar devices in Germany may have up to 2,000 Wp of panel output. Here you'll find kits, usually with four panels – ideal for gardens, garages or east-west installations.

2,000 Wp of panels, 800 watts of feed-in

“2000 watts” in a product title almost always refers to the panel output, i.e. four panels of around 450 to 500 Wp each. Even so, no more than 800 watts are fed in, because that limit applies to the inverter or the output to the home circuit. Some kits include a larger inverter that is throttled to 800 watts for operation as a plug-in solar device – check the datasheet to see whether and how this is set.

The advantage of large panel areas: you reach 800 watts earlier in the morning, hold it longer into the afternoon and get more yield on cloudy days. With an east-west split, production is spread more evenly across the day.

Who a large kit is worth it for

Four panels need space – around 7 to 8 square metres. That's rarely feasible on a typical balcony railing; gardens, flat roofs, garages or carports make more sense. Without a battery, self-consumption only rises to a limited extent, because more power is clipped or exported at midday. With a battery, surpluses can be shifted into the evening.

  • Plug: according to DIN VDE V 0126-95, a dedicated energy plug-in connector is specified above 960 Wp, not a standard Schuko plug.
  • Inverter: four MPPT inputs allow different orientations without mutual power losses.
  • Mounting: flat roofs and gardens need mounting frames with ballast or ground anchors; take wind loads into account.
  • Cables: plan for longer runs to the feed-in socket.

Registration and permits

Registering in the Market Master Data Register is enough here too, provided panel output and feed-in output stay within the limits. For mounting frames on garages, on façades or in conservation areas, local building or design regulations may also apply. If in doubt, ask your local council before installing larger frames.

Comparing large kits properly

With 2,000 Wp kits, always work out the price per Wp and check which mounting hardware is included – especially with garden and flat-roof kits, the mounting frame accounts for a large part of the price. Also check which inverter is fitted and whether it's limited to 800 watts out of the box. Kits with batteries have their own comparison page, because price and benefit work out quite differently there.
