The mount determines safety, tilt and therefore yield. Here you'll find railing brackets, adjustable mounting frames and wall brackets for common panel sizes.
Which mount suits your location?
On a balcony railing, panels are usually attached vertically or at a slight tilt using hooks or clamping profiles. For flat roofs, garages and gardens, there are mounting frames with an adjustable angle, often between 0 and 90 degrees. Wall brackets hold the panel on a façade or garden shed. The key is that the mount matches the panel width – typical dimensions are 113 to 118 centimetres.
- Railing: measure the profile (round or square) and thickness of the handrail beforehand.
- Flat roof: ballast instead of drilling, so the roof membrane stays watertight; consider the weight and roof load.
- Garden: ground anchors or concrete bases to resist wind load.
- Wall: choose wall plugs and screws to suit the masonry; insulated façades need special fixings.
Tilt and yield
In Germany, a south-facing tilt of around 30 to 35 degrees delivers the highest yield over the year. Vertically on a railing (90 degrees), it drops noticeably – although in winter, with the sun low in the sky, vertical mounting performs relatively well. An adjustable mount is worthwhile if you can angle the panels a little without them sticking out beyond the railing.
Safety first
In a storm, a panel acts like a sail. Only use mounts designed for the panel weight and wind load, and tighten all screws as instructed. Panels should not protrude outwards beyond the railing if there are footpaths or neighbouring balconies below. In rented flats and owners' associations, the type of fixing may be subject to approval – agree on it beforehand. Check the fixings after storms and at least once a year.
Materials and what's included
Good mounts are made of aluminium with stainless steel screws, so nothing rusts. Check whether clamps, screws and rubber pads to protect the railing are included, and whether the kit is designed for one or two panels. Some offers are pairs, others packs of four – compare the price per panel slot. For flat-roof frames, you'll also need ballast blocks, which are rarely included.
