Since Germany's Solar Package I (Solarpaket I), 800 watts of feed-in power is the upper limit for plug-in solar devices. Here you'll find plug-and-play kits with a matching inverter – sorted by popularity, with live prices from several shops.
What “800 watts” actually means for a balcony power plant
The 800 watts refer to the inverter's output, i.e. the maximum amount of power the device feeds into your home's circuit. The panels can be considerably more powerful: plug-in solar devices may have up to 2,000 Wp of panel capacity. That's why you'll find many kits with 880, 920 or 1,000 Wp on an 800 W inverter.
This oversizing makes sense. Panels only deliver their rated output under laboratory conditions; on an ordinary day, in the morning, in the evening or when mounted vertically on a railing, they produce noticeably less. More panel area lifts the curve throughout the day, even if a little power is clipped at midday on very clear days.
What to look for when comparing kits
Don't just compare the total price – check what's in the box. Some offers include a mount, connection cable and a Schuko or Wieland plug, others only panels and an inverter. Factor in any missing accessories before putting offers side by side.
- Panel output: 2 × 400–500 Wp is the typical range for a balcony; more is mainly worthwhile with an east-west split or an unfavourable orientation.
- Inverter: it should come with a declaration of conformity to VDE-AR-N 4105 (grid and system protection), plus an app or Wi-Fi if you want to see your yield.
- Plug: under the German product standard DIN VDE V 0126-95, the Schuko (standard German socket) connection is intended for devices up to 960 Wp of panel output without a battery; above that, a dedicated energy plug-in connector is specified.
- Panels: glass-glass panels are more robust and usually bifacial; flexible panels are lighter but often age faster.
- Cable length: measure the distance from the balcony to the outdoor or indoor socket beforehand.
Registration and operation at a glance
In Germany, you now only register an 800 W balcony power plant in the Federal Network Agency's Market Master Data Register (Marktstammdatenregister), usually within one month of commissioning. A separate notification to the grid operator is no longer required. If you still have an old Ferraris meter without a backstop, it may keep running until the metering point operator replaces it.
Since October 2024, tenants in Germany have had a general right to their landlord's consent, just as flat owners do towards the owners' association. However, the landlord may have a say in how it's mounted – clarify this before buying, especially for railing or façade mounting.
